Our rule of thumb is that an inch of ice weighs the equivalent of a foot of fresh snow. That's approximately 5 pounds per square inch. Your roof can withstand approximately 20 pounds of pressure per square feet of snow.
As you can imagine, the weight of snow and ice can add up quickly. New Stage Home Improvement recommends homeowners remove snow from their roofs when it exceeds two feet in height. If the snow is particularly heavy, consider clearing your roof before two feet accumulates.

Icicles can be a telltale sign that ice dams have formed or will form soon. So is a layer of bulky ice along your gutters.
