How Heat Affects Your Roofing and Siding

July 20, 2024

After a cool spring, this summer is proving to be a scorcher in Massachusetts and especially throughout Greater Boston. With temperatures reaching triple digits, you may be wondering what effect the heat has on your home's roof and siding. Power Construction is here to help you understand what's happening to your roof and siding during a heat wave and how we can help you avoid heat-related issues.

Effects of Heat on Your Roof

Heat has several effects on your home's roof. Thermal expansion and contraction can affect your roof's shingles or metal sheets. As the weather heats up and then cools down, shingles can crack, curl, and become brittle. Metal roofs can warp, buckle, or experience loosening of fixtures.

Roofs have large surface areas that are frequently exposed to full sun. This means they absorb a significant amount of heat. Not only can this accelerate the aging of your shingles and other roofing materials, it can cause heat to build up in your attic and make your home hotter. This can make moisture issues worse, as trapped heat can cause condensation that leads to mold and wood rot.

Effects of Heat on Your Siding

Thermal expansion and contraction can also cause issues with your vinyl and wood siding. Vinyl can warp, buckle, and become distorted under extreme heat. Wood siding can also expand and contract, causing cracks, splits, or gaps in coverage that allows moisture to penetrate your home.

In addition to these effects from expansion and contraction, heat causes vinyl to become brittle and wood to dry out. The degradation of siding materials can lead to damage that may leave you susceptible to pest infestations and future moisture issues if left unaddressed.

What's more, the color of your siding could exacerbate high heat effects. Dark siding absorbs more heat, which can lead to increased cooling costs. On the other hand, light siding absorbs less heat and can help you keep your home cooler in the summer.
