How to Prepare Your Home's Exterior for Winter

September 21, 2024

Is your home ready for Old Man Winter? Fall is the perfect time to inspect and repair your home's exterior, including its roofing and siding. Here are a few things to add to your fall clean-up checklist to make sure your home is ready for the colder months.

1. Inspect & Repair Your Roofing

To avoid costly damage after winter ice and snow storms, inspect your roof now for damaged, loose, or missing shingles. If you spot any, give New Stage Home Improvement a call to schedule your full roof inspection. We will assess any damage to your shingles as well as identify any issues with your flashing around the chimney, vents, and skylights. Then, we'll share our recommendations with you on the repairs needed to prevent water from seeping into your home.

2. Clean Out Your Gutters

Clogged gutters can cause water to back up in your gutter system, leading to ice dams, leaks, and damage to your home's roof or siding. Take an afternoon to clear debris, leaves, and dirt from your home's gutter system, including the gutters and downspouts. We can recommend a reputable gutter cleaning company if you prefer to hire someone to clean your gutters for you.

3. Inspect & Prepare Your Siding

Your siding is your home's first line of defense against winter wind and chill. Remove dirt, mold, and mildew from your siding in the fall, and inspect it for signs of damage such as rot, cracks, and warping. If you spot any of these issues, get in touch with us to schedule your free project estimate for the necessary repairs.

4. Turn Off Your Outdoor Spigots

Your home's exterior water supply can freeze and cause major damage if left on all winter. Turn off the water supply to your outdoor spigots and let the remaining water drain out so your pipes don't burst over the winter. Consider adding faucet covers or frost-free hose bibs for extra protection against the cold.

5. Clean Your Chimney

Before you enjoy the first fire of the season, be sure to get your chimney inspected and cleaned. A professional chimney sweep will safely remove creosote buildup and ensure the interior of your chimney is in good working order so you can stay cozy all winter long.
